Planting

The kids were with me when I went to get some plants for the "garden" the other day and Logan was so excited about it that I let him choose a couple. He chose one of the tomato plants and a watermelon! Let's see how he likes helping me take care of them...

The plants sat in the garage for a couple of days due to rain, but I was able to get them in the ground on Saturday afternoon. Here they are for your viewing pleasure (from top left): Logan with the cherry tomato plant he chose, one zucchini, one watermelon, and three tomatoes - Jet Star, Big Boy, and Better Boy.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Logan remembers from gardening last year and to seeing how many times he decides the plants need watering - each day. And let's not forget that even though she was napping during the planting phase, Bergen will be helping too. Fun times!

New Favorite

UPDATE: I gave Marisa's suggestion a try and had Skittles in my popcorn at the drive in over the weekend. Delicious! And yes, another new favorite.

I LOVE popcorn! I especially love eating a big tub of popcorn (without butter) at a movie theater. I love eating popcorn at home while watching a movie or DVD on TV. I love caramel corn and cheese corn and white cheddar cheese corn. I'm sure there are ways I would love to eat popcorn that I haven't even thought about.

Many moons ago my friend Shannon introduced me to m&m's in popcorn. That's right, in popcorn. You just sprinkle some in the tub and eat them without warning, as you eat the popcorn. Without warning, because you're so engrossed in the movie that you're shoveling the popcorn into your mouth, handful after handful, without thinking (Which is really the only way to eat popcorn while watching a movie, isn't it?), and the m&m's are mixed in with it. And you never know when you'll get that little added surprise. Yum.

What? Some of you don't think this tasty treat sounds good? Well then stop reading now, because I have a new favorite...

Sugar Babies in popcorn!

Man oh man! We didn't have any m&m's last night (oh the horror!), but I did have a box of Sugar Babies. So I tried them. Can you say caramel corn without the work? Of course it wasn't exactly the same, but it was good. Sticky and chewy and just plain yummy.

So there you have it. A tasty new treat to add to my favorites list. Try it and let me know what you think.

Fire Truck Frenzy

Logan chose a fire truck theme for his birthday this year. It was a fun one to plan and the more we talked about it the more excited he got! We ended up with a weeks' worth of celebrations when all was said and done, and enjoyed (almost) every single minute! We starting by having family over for cake and ice cream the Sunday before, and ended with a "friend" party the Saturday after the big day.

I had fun making the cake and Logan was a big helper when decorating it. Of course eating it was the best part of all! Mmmmmmmmm red food coloring!

Cake and ice cream are always a hit with our family! And cousins to play with are an added bonus. Happy birthday to you too Kate!! And thanks everyone for your coming to our house.

On Tuesday Logan got to take birthday treats to preschool and have the birthday song sung to him. He thought the birthday cake crown he got was pretty cool and counted the numbers on it several times. I thought "Yeah, no more red frosting at our house!"

As a special treat on Friday, Logan got to go to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and watch "Indy 500" practice with his dad and grandpa. Lucky kid.

More fun on Friday included the Father/Son camp out our church has every year. (Sorry no pictures. Daddy didn't get the camera out.)

On Saturday the birthday party began with a trip to the fire station where firemen Ted, Chad and Tom showed us around and told us all how things are done. It was really cool! There was also some training going on that day so we got to see a big truck at work spraying water!

Can you believe that when a call comes in the firemen can be out of the station in ONE minute? I wish I could get out of the house that fast!

After our visit to the fire station it was back to our house for some outdoor games and cupcakes. Logan sure had fun playing with his friends. We're glad all of you could come and party with us! Thank you!

Four is fun!

Logan turned four years old on May 7. My how the time has flown! He is a joy to have in our family and we were happy to celebrate his birthday. Here's how it went:

Pancakes for breakfast. He liked the big firetruck pancake, but wouldn't eat it. He wanted to save it!

A visit to the doctor for his four year check up. Stats: 43 pounds, 43 inches, big and strong and still in the 97th percentile.

Lunch at Pizza Hut (Logan's choice) with a free ice cream cone for dessert!

And once back home, presents to open before daddy headed to work. Among his favorites were Transformer pajamas and a skateboard. What a fun day!

We're building for the birthday boy

We had to give Logan his birthday present a little early this year. That, or it would have been several days late. He was thrilled when Daddy (with Grandpa Don's help) was finally finished building it and he could play!

Happy early birthday Logan! We hope you have lots of fun on your swing set this summer.

Bergen Update

Bergen had tubes put in her ears the beginning of April and she is a different girl! Okay, really, she's the girl she was before her ears started hurting! Yippee! She had been up night after night with on-going ear infections the past few months and I had been getting an average of 3 1/2 to 5 hours of sleep those nights. She is now back to sleeping well and I am a happy, not-so-tired mom.
I am truly grateful for modern medicine.

Here are a few of the observations we've made since having our sweetie back:

1) Bergen is a talker! Imagine that! She was pretty quiet and mellow before her surgery; now she wants to hear herself talk every chance she gets! She is learning quickly and making us laugh a lot. Some of the words she's been saying regularly over the past few weeks are alla (hello) while holding a phone or anything resembling one up to her ear, cat, dog, ish (fish), moo, Jesus, and my favorite gasses (glasses)! Bergen is also a singer and a dancer. (More on that in a later post.)

2) Bergen is a walker! She was trying hard, but wasn't doing very well before her surgery because she had trouble maintaining her equilibrium. We are the parents of a drunken sailor no more! She literally ran to get away from Logan today!

3) Bergen has a temper! I comforted her quite a bit before the surgery because it seemed she was in pain all the time. Now that I know she's not, I don't cater to her every whim. So if she doesn't get her way, Bergen will sit on the floor (usually at your feet) and wail until she decides it's time to stop and go about her business as usual. I was drying my hair after a shower recently and because I didn't pick her up while I had the blow dryer on she sat just outside the bathroom door and screamed until I was finished. Of course I tried to calm her the entire time, but to no avail.

4) Bergen can be a brat! Several times lately I've reached to pick her up only to have her flop backwards just out of my reach. I think maybe it's because I make her reach for me a little instead of scooping her up without her having to make any effort. What's a mom to do?

5) Bergen is compassionate! Whenever I hold her and pat her back, Bergen pats mine too. She will also stroke my arm. She climbs up to snuggle at every opportunity and likes to hum in your ear.

6) Bergen is STILL a joy! She has learned to give hugs and shares them often. She grips your neck and squeezes then releases and squeezes again. She has also started giving kisses. Can a parent ever get enough of that? I don't think so.

Tribute and trying times

My mom passed away recently. She was 67 years old and had courageously battled cancer for the last four years. I love and will miss my mom every day for as long as I live, and am truly grateful to have had her in my life for 45 years! Here is a little bit about her:

Judith ReNee Low Andriese was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. She immigrated to the United States when she was 7, but returned with her brother to enjoy many summers at the family ranch in Mountain View, where she learned to cook, sew, fish and ride horseback. She remained close to her Canadian family and was proud of her Canadian heritage.

My mom, Judy, graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City with honors. She was a member of the Acapella Choir and sang in the Trio. She was in the Social Dance Club and was a journalist for the school paper. She also graduated from Stephens-Henager Business College, where she became adept at typing and shorthand. Before computers, she could type so fast that the keys on an electric typewriter would often get stuck! (*My mom wanted me to take a type class in junior high. I didn't want to. I took the class, but didn't learn to type correctly. She suggested I take another type class in college. I did, and I still do not type correctly. I was/am a stubborn child.)

My mom met my dad, Lo Andriese, at a church dance when she was 14. She was attracted to him because he was handsome and a good dancer! They became High School sweethearts and were married the February after she graduated. (*I get chills thinking of them dancing together. They were amazing!)

My mom and dad had three children and eight grandchildren and enjoyed 48 wonderful years of marriage together. (*I didn't hear my parents argue until I was in college. That was good and bad. I was really worried when I heard them, but I learned that differences of opinion can be discussed quietly.)

With a kind heart and a thoughtful, loving way, my mom gently encouraged each family member to be curious, seek education and develop our talents. She dearly loved my dad, her children and grandchildren, and was proud of our accomplishments. (*My mom would often brag about us kids, saying "Audrey was the Homecoming Queen, Eric was the Senior Ball King, and Gigi was on the swim team!" I was embarrassed by that because I wasn't chosen as royalty when nominated, but my mom attended every one of my swim meets and I knew she was proud of me for doing something that wasn't just because it was the popular thing to do. She was my biggest cheerleader.)

In her own right, my mom was a fine seamstress, gardener, and ceramist. (*She made Halloween and ballet recital costumes like nobody's business, grew and shared the bounty from a garden that was taller than she was, and had her own pottery wheel and kiln in the backyard.) She had many other interests including reading, camping, swimming and spending time with family and friends. My mom especially enjoyed jazz and classical music. (*Her love of classical music rubbed off on me, the jazz I didn't care for. And although I often made fun of the music my mom was listening to then, I certainly can appreciate Ella Fitzgerald now!)

Throughout her life, music, dancing and singing brought my mom great joy. (*I remember dancing with my mom in every room of the house and singing all the time. She had a beautiful voice. There were many occasions that we didn't hear the doorbell because the music was turned up so loud. People could hear it from down the street and either thought we were crazy, or knew we were having a good time.)

My mom appreciated art in all its forms. And she loved being married to an artist! (*She and my dad were perfect for each other!) She exposed her children to all sorts of artistic experiences: the ballet, the opera, museums, renaissance fairs, etc. She bought an art gallery and custom picture framing business when we kids were all in school full-time and enjoyed her work. My mom was an accomplished corporate career woman, but some of her fondest memories came from operating the gallery, where she taught my sister, brother and me the trade of custom matting and picture framing. (*A skill I am proud to have and share to this day.)

Positive and ever gracious, my mom listened and kept up with all the goings on in the lives of family and friends. She was always thinking of others and they knew it. (*I remember feeling lonely on occasion in my early teens and my mom sitting on the edge of my bed, hugging me while I cried on her shoulder that I had no friends. She was my safe place and became my best friend.)

My mom was generous, fun and had a great sense of humor. She liked British comedy and introduced us to Monty Python and Fawlty Towers. She and my dad taught us how to enjoy ourselves and also raised us to be ladies and a gentleman.

My mom was an inspiration to many. She was filled with faith and was grateful for her blessings, saying often "I've had a happy life and have been well loved." (I do love you Mom.)
